day long, cnn will bring you the ceremonies, the concerts, the celebrations and, of course, the political and the historical context of the day. first, we want to bring you up to date now on the hostage situation that is happening in alger algeria. the crisis is all over this morning, but so many questions, including how many people are still missing. here's what we do know at this hour. it launched a second assault yesterday that ended the standoff after three days. the interior ministry almost 700 hostages have been freed, as long with foreigners at least 23 hostages are dead, including three british citizens and so are dozens of islamic militants. i'm joined by our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. first of all, are any americans missing and what is washington saying at this point? >> good morning, randi. this violent and unstable situation over, but the u.s. is still trying to determine what happened. now, according to the state department. one american man, one american citizen is dead. six other american hostages were freed and it is believed there are still a sma

situation room." >>> and the breaking news continues here in cnn. we're covering the country's latest multiple shooting incident on a college campus. three people, at least two of them were students caught in a cross fire. a fourth person suffered a heart attack during the shooting. it all happened near houston, texas, on the north harris campus of lone star college. that's a community college in texas. cnn's ed lavandera has the latest. ed, what are you hearing? >> reporter: this shooting appears to be a situation that started off as an altercation in one of the buildings between two people. one of those firing shots was wounded and is now in custody. two people were caught in the crossfire and those people were wounded and then there was a fourth person that in all of this may lay had a heart attack. that person is being treated as well. and now the focus is on the second shooter, the second person in the altercation. that person fled the campus itself. the officials say that everything is safe and secure now on the campus but the search for that second suspect is the main concern a

out the fist one. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is here in washington with me this morning. good morning to you. so thumbs or thumbs down. how do they think he's doing? >> we have some polls, a lot of polls. a lot of polls have skasked, ise doing a good job? do you approve or not approve? our cnn poll of polls say 53% say, yes, they approve of the job the president is doing in office, 42% disapprove. but what about the specific issues, not overall. take a look at this from orc, look at the numbers on the left, randi. these are where he's doing very well on the issues, terrorism, environment, foreign affairs, immigration, but those are not so important to americans. the economy, he's at 48%. what's the second most important? the deficit, we know that's been in the news lately, 41%. so it depends on the issue. >> and gun policy is in there as well. that snuck in there. has the president lived up to expectations, do you think, according to our polls? >> we asked just that and you can see from these results, about one in ten, 13% said he has exceeded expectations over the last

delgado, live at the cnn weather center in atlanta with a look at what kind of weather we can expect here today. i have to tell you, we're counting our blessings. we heard it was about to be 23 degrees at this hour. we'll take 37. >> absolutely, zoraida. you're enjoying a heat wave in comparison to what they felt last year. we will see a chance for a few snow flurries to arrive later into the evening. here's your forecast. high temperatures will be above freezing. 39 right near swearing in, 43. and then notice your feel-like temperature will be 37 degrees. so there will be a bit of a wind around. but for all the parties later on, certainly everybody will need to bundle up. if you think it's going to be cold in washington, d.c., more cold air is on the way and it's going to be arriving from the northern plains as well as the upper midwest. get this, wind chill values will be down to minus 50 in some locations. some of these parts you could endure hypothermia or frostbite within 20 to 30 minutes. you need to bundle up today and put on a lot of layers. that makes you feel better with the tem

with cnn. which could explain why all we got from congresswoman joann emerson was the slam-door treatment. the southeast missouri republican is quitting congress. not because she lost. in fact, she just won her last election to her tenth term by a landslide. she's quitting because she landed a job back in what you might call the real family business, the politics of influencing congress. follow the lineage. in the '70s, joann emerson married a lobbyist bill emerson. wh he went on to become congressman from missouri, joann went on to become a lobbyist for the restaurant industry. when he died of cancer in 1996 she took his seat and served nine terms since then. while the combined emersons were spending 32 years in congress they were raiding two daughters, both of whom who are now registered lobbyists. now congresswoman emerson goes back to a trade association directing a team of lobbyists. >> it's the personification of the revolving door. >> reporter: kathy kyle we the sunlight foundation says it's a revolving door of lobbyists and politicians and staff members and big payoff jobs that er
